Google Play Games

How about something you don't need?

I don't about you, but I usually skip registering on Google Play whenever I launch game. Nevertheless. Upon checking out Google Play Games I realized that no amount of tapping besides the pop-up window would make Google go away and stop prying into my gaming exploits. be that as it may, looking around felt like a stroll through memory lane. Every game I have ever played was standing there like it was from my GOG.com collection, except most of these were free and long gone from my device and memory.

Putting that aside, what really caught my eye, was the gameplay recording feature. Provided you have enough storage space (which I currently don't have), you can record the screen while playing a game directly from Google Play Games. The file will be stored locally, and you can also upload it to YouTube via the same Skynet account.

Google Play Games

The weirdest part that some users have noticed while using this app is that it forces all other apps to update. This despite having updates turned off. I could not verify this, since my tablet already had Google Play Games pre-installed, and my updates were on anyway. After turning them off and restarting my device, I did not notice anything of the sort. So you can rest assured that updates will not wildly start pouring in, theoretically.

Coming back to the good stuff, with Google Play Games you can easily discover more games. That's because the app itself looks like a version of the Play Store that filters out anything non-game related.

Regards to the collection feel, if Google Play Games tried to replicate such a feature, then it failed miserably. Unlike in the regular store, here you cannot remove apps from the list. That means that every little game that you've ever installed, even to subsequently uninstall it, will be visible in the "All My Games" section. This very fact is what's keeping me from checking back into this app after finishing this written rant.

Google Play Games

Features

  • "Collection" overview
  • Gameplay recording
  • Support for cloud saves (where applicable)
  • Achievement overview
  • User profiles (w/ rank and achievements)
  • Game Recommendations

Conclusion

Google Play Games looks like a twist on the Play Store with the added features of recording your plays, cloud saves and achievement overviews. Fairly nice if you're a hardcore Android gamer (if that even exists). Honestly though, I find it a rather useless spin off of the Play Store
